Grade 1 and I explored objects and materials. The kids had a great time
building and creating as they explored. They designed marble runs as their
final creation which was amazing to see! They used recycled materials to
develop a trail for the marble to take. They also had to revise their plans as
they went and learned what worked and what didn’t. They are a wonderful bunch
of inventors!

Walter Wick :: I Spy
In IBL I have started a new project with a grade 3 class exploring the work of Walter Wick. He is the photographer behind I Spy books and Can You See What I See? Today we explored the books with an examining eye and noted what we notice about his work and what we wonder about his work. We collected our wonders on this padlet. We are going to connect with Walter Wick, either online or with a Skype call next week to actually ask him our questions! Then we will use his expertise to publish our own "I Spy" book with our own collections of items. We are all pumped about this project!

Layered Liquids
Today in IBL we did a experiment wfe miss dent it was fun! - Karsten Today we had a grat day because we did a experamat waf miss dent. We uost liquids to. It was fun we had a grat day! i liket my day - Shelby!!!!
In IBL I am working with my own class! It is nice to work with them and my teacher partner, Candace at the same time!
We have been doing experiments for Solids, Liquids and Gasses. Today we talked about density and layered liquids in a jar. Science experiments are the best because kids are so engaged. They just cannot wait to see what will happen. We get to talk about scientific information, make predictions and then actually see what happens. Today they learned that liquids that are more dense stay at the bottom and liquids that are less dense go to the top. We are all having a blast!

Earth Day in the Library
I
have been working with a few classes on Earth Day activities this month in the library. Mrs. Tresoor’s grade 1’s gathered ideas for ways they can help the Earth
on Earth Day and all year around. Then they created this great display of their
ideas in the library!
Mrs Daraska and Miss Dodd’s
classes have both written Earth Day Haiku poems. We brainstormed the things
they can do to be more sustainable citizens and take care of the Earth. Then
they used these ideas to write haiku poems, typing out their good copies to be
displayed with their art.

Our Student Blog Journey. On your mark, get set, start with paper. What!?
We are on the Kidblog journey! Very soon we will each have our own live blogs. This was the plan all along but the plan was quickly put into motion when we had a few students head off on vacation after Christmas.
Typically when students go away I send a travel journal with a few activities for them to do while they are away that they get to keep after as a vacation keepsake. This time I decided to give them the option of a paper travel journal or doing it on their kidblog. I gave them a quick how-to and they were off. You can check out their awesome travel blog posts here. Also take a look at the conversations that were generated in the comments section. Very cool.
When I introduce student blogs there are some safety and ethics conversations that need to happen first. We start with a conversation about what exactly a blog is, what all the different parts are about and what it means to be a responsible digital citizen. Much of this vocabulary is new, like posts, gadgets, commenting, global audience and digital citizenship. The children need to make the connection between what they say to someone in person and what they say to or about someone online as being the same thing. They need to understand that just because they are posting to their blog on their own doesn't mean that what they post does not affect other people. And they need to understand that unlike when they write in their notebook which stays on the shelf, when they post to their blog it is for a global audience. All of this comes with great responsibility that they need to understand and take seriously.

Next we tackle blog design. I want them to take time to think about catchy, thoughtful titles, writing posts that have purpose and make sense and the fun things like gadgets and backgrounds. I have found that they take more time with this and can focus on it better if we do it on paper first. They create a paper blog, doing the fun design parts first, and then will write and edit their first blog post on paper. We discuss the elements and process expected for writing a quality blog post. Once that is complete we will discuss and create criteria for quality commenting and use sticky notes to leave comments on each others paper blogs.
It may sound like a drawn out process but I feel very strongly about the teaching that needs to take place around digital citizenship and using social media responsibly. In this day and age, we need to take online safety, responsibility and respect as seriously as we do in our classrooms and hallways.

Seasonal Changes with Grade 1 {IBL}
In IBL (Inquiry Based Learning) I am working with grade 1. I taught a grade 1-2 multiage class a few years ago but my memories of September grade 1 children have faded a little. I absolutely love working with grade 1, they are SO excited to see me and are gung-ho to do just about anything I announce!! In Science they are learning about Daily and Seasonal Changes so we are focusing in on the changes animals go through in the different seasons. We talked about the seasons (no, Christmas and April are not seasons...) and some of the things they know about the seasons and then they got to use sticky notes and smelly markers (best writing lures ever) to post their ideas in each season. I reminded them that if they didn't know how to spell an idea they had, they could just write the sounds they hear, stretch out the word, etc. This was followed by some awesome ideas that the children wrote independently! There were also a few of these:
child: "I did one!"
me: "Awesome! Can you read it to me?"
child: "Umm, I don't remember what I wrote."
me: "That's ok, I think it says "
child: "Mhmm, I think so too."
I love it.

Getting Started with Kidblogs! {IBL}
"It's a big responsibility, you're the only ones in our school so far with personal blogs. Can you handle it?" You can imagine the intensity of fist pumps and quiet "yessss" under their breaths.
Today the children in Room 9 are embarking on a blogging adventure. Each child will have their own blog space on Kidblog that will be all their own. I know they expected to come to the lab and "get on the blogs already" but there is a lot to talk about first. We started with, and will continue to talk about being responsible digital citizens, how to write quality blog posts and quality commenting. It is very important to me that the children appreciate the responsibility of having a global audience and also understand what is and isn't appropriate to post for this audience.
The children will be supported to write, edit and publish their work but it will be their work. Their posts will be a true snapshot of who they are as writers at this point in their lives. By the end of the year we will be able to look back and see how much they have grown in our 10 months together! That sounds pretty awesome to me.

KidBlogs is a blogging platform that allows teachers to set up accounts for their students under the umbrella of a classroom account. This means that I have complete control over what is posted to each blog. Before any post or comment appears online, I receive an email and then have the option to approve, deny, or edit the post or comment. If the post or comment meets our criteria, I approve it and then it can been seen by others. I moderate everything and choose what goes live.

Paper Slide Videos :: The Integumentary System {IBL}
The final piece for the grade 5 Human Body Series is the Integumentary System - the skin. All the videos will be compiled into a DVD for each of the grade 5 students to keep. What a great portfolio piece! I loved doing this project with grade 5.

Sharing Canadian Projects {IBL}
I have been working with Mrs. Dyck's grade 6 class to create Prezis. They researched a Canadian person, place or thing and did a writing activity with their facts. We worked together on their Prezis and then they shared them with each other in a Prezi Around the Room celebration. Before they started, we discussed that their presentations would be viewed by their classmates, not accompany a speaking presentation from the students. So their presentation would need to include all their information.
Each student left a netbook with their presentation and a feedback form at their desk. Then, they visited each other's projects and recorded what they learned from their classmates projects. The kids really enjoyed seeing what each other had produced and liked learning about each other's topics. Here is a sample of one of their Prezis and some snaps from the celebration.

The students are doing an awesome job of breaking down their system into steps that make sense and describing how their system works. As they finish, they have a clear understanding of their system and a video production they are proud of. Awesome!

I have started working with both grade 5 classes in IBL. They are looking at the body systems in Science so we decided to do paper slide videos in small groups on each of the systems.

Mrs. Turner's Environmentalists! {IBL}
This week I finished up another project with our other grade 1 class, Mrs. Turner's class. The children wrote, edited and typed their tips to help the Earth and we did an art project together using up-cycled National Geographic magazines. Then, each student created their own slide in a Haiku Deck on an iPad. We hope you can follow all these tips all year long!

Earth Day Tips {IBL}
Mrs. Kohut's class and I have wrapped up their Earth Day Tips project. As I explained in a previous post, they wrote their tips to help the Earth and we typed them together. Then we did an art project using National Geographic magazines that were donated by a community member. Finally, we created a Haiku Deck so we could show off our work beyond the school hallway. We hope you enjoy it!

Tips for Helping the Earth {IBL}
In IBL I have been working with both grade 1 classes. They wrote tips to help the Earth and we typed them together. Then we did an art project re-using some old National Geographic magazines that were donated to the school by a community member. The children used blue and green pieces from the magazines to cover the land and water on an outline of the Earth. We put the two together as a part of our Earth Day bulletin board.
Now we are working together to make a Haiku Deck of our work! Haiku Deck is a great app for the iPad that allows us to create a presentation of our work. We will post our Haiku Decks here for you to see when they are complete. Stay tuned!
