Welcome to our community! We created this tour of our local community. We hope you enjoy it! After exploring what we have in our community, we each chose one feature to share. We wrote our scripts and recorded in front of a green screen. Then we added a picture in the background and voila!

Assembly!

This month it was our turn to host the assembly! If we wanted to we could have speaking parts to emcee the assembly. We shared the community tour green screen video that we made in social studies! We also sang "I Love a B OO K" for the school. A teacher in our school division named Celeste Krochak wrote the song and recorded it and we learned it from her cd. Then at the end the whole school did Drop Everything and Read. We did a great job at hosting the assembly and sharing our project!

Stop Motion!

Today Matea made this stop motion video! I have a feeling once we share this there will be a few other eager little ones at my door! Great job, Matea!

When I got home and was finalizing the video to post, my kids were watching with me. Emily is 3.5 and Oliver is almost 2. They wanted to keep watching it over and over. I suggested we make our own video just like the Lego one. So we did! This is Emily's stop motion:

It Only Takes One || Be Someone's Hero

Welcome back! We have had a great start to grade 2 this year already!

A common theme we like to focus on at our school is the idea the it only takes one person to make a difference. By doing one simple, kind thing for someone else we can change their day and send a ripple of kindness around. We talk about this a lot at school and especially in our assemblies when we are all together.

Yesterday at our Welcome Back assembly, Mrs. Palamar showed us a great video from the oh-so-entertaining Kid President. He always has the best messages and delivers them so well! There were so many great quotes to take away from this video, we will definitely be watching it again in the future. Here is the video for you to check out and some of our favorite and most important quotes!

"You have everything right now to change the world."

"Heroes are just ordinary people doing extraordinary things. They inspire other people to be extraordinary."

"If you want to be awesome, treat people awesome."

"It’s about compassion; there is nothing stronger than that."

"You just need to care."

"You have everything that you need to make someone’s day more awesome."

"Someone may never have told you this, but I promise it’s true; the world needs heroes and that hero could be you."

We Went to the Zoo, Zoo, Zoo...

Today we went on a field trip to the zoo! We had an excellent time and learned a ton. We also went to the Nature Playground which is amazing. If you live in Winnipeg or are ever in Winnipeg, you need to check it out. When we got back to school we made this slideshow with our pictures from the day. The kids added their ideas to some of them. Check it out!

Wrapping Up Week 1!

This afternoon we were browsing old posts on our blog and we came across this great song. "What I Am" by Will.i.am has such a great message, we love it! I am reposting it here so the kids can find it easily from home this weekend. We had a great first week back and are enjoying getting to know each other, figuring out new routines and learning about some of the neat things we will do together. I also shared some news with our class today, I am going to have a baby in the new year! Everyone was very excited and had lots of questions. As you can imagine with 6 and 7 year olds, this was a very entertaining way to end a great first week!
Have a super weekend, see you next week!

I like how he sang. -Rhyann

Paper Slide Videos :: The Integumentary System {IBL}

The final piece for the grade 5 Human Body Series is the Integumentary System - the skin. All the videos will be compiled into a DVD for each of the grade 5 students to keep. What a great portfolio piece! I loved doing this project with grade 5.

Paper Slide Videos :: The Circulatory System {IBL}

The sixth video in our Human Body Video Series is The Circulatory System. This system was longer and had more information than some others, the group did a great job of sticking with it and creating a great product.

Paper Slide Videos :: The Nervous System {IBL}

The fourth video in the grade 5 Human Body series is the Nervous System. The students are doing an awesome job of breaking down their system into steps that make sense and describing how their system works. As they finish, they have a clear understanding of their system and a video production they are proud of. Awesome!

Time Lapse Video

Last weekend while I had the caterpillars at home, I tried out time lapse photography/video. I set up my dslr camera with a caterpillar that was ready to go into chrysalis and let it got all night, taking a photo every minute and a half. When I woke up I was excited to see how it turned out...the caterpillar was still hanging there and the camera battery had died half way through the night. So, I charged the battery and set it up again through the day. This time it worked! I caught the caterpillar going into his chrysalis. The lesson this time was that the photos needed to be closer together. Regardless, I made it into a video. You will notice that the caterpillar very quickly changes, this is because it happened in a matter of 5 minutes which was only a few photos.

I also found an app that makes this process WAY easier. Of course. It is called iTimelapse and it costs $1.99. Worth every penny! You follow all the steps and the app takes the photos and puts them together (renders them) into a video. You can watch the video right there or share it in a variety of ways. Of course my class thought this was as awesome as I did so we tried it at the beginning of their gym class. This video is of them having their free time warm up and then settling in to their squads.

I am planning to catch the process of the butterfly emerging using this process as soon as they are ready! Stay tuned :)

I am getting ready to work on paper slide videos with the grade 5 classes. They are learning about the body systems and will use the videos to describe the process of one of the 7 systems:
  • Digestive System
  • Skeletal System
  • Muscular System
  • Nervous System
  • Integumentary System
  • Respiratory System
  • Circulatory System
Check out this introductory video which describes paper slide videos and the process we will use to make them.

Chris Hadfield's Trip Home

As you probably heard, Chris Hadfield travelled home from the ISS to Earth yesterday. They departed from the ISS at 6:08 local time and landed in Kazakhstan at about 9:30 pm. Of course, like most of his expedition, this was widely talked about online and streamed live online. In case you missed it, here is a short video of the highlights from his trip home. We will certainly miss hearing updates from space but are glad Hadfield had such a successful expedition and made it home safely!

Watching Animals LIVE!

We are live streaming our caterpillars again, you can see the feed along the right side of our blog. As in past years, there are many other animals to watch live online using sites like livestream and ustream. Some popular ones are the Decorah Eagles and the Peregrine Falcons that nest in downtown Winnipeg. The Peregrine Falcon cam will be live from Winnipeg on May 15, 2013.

I also just found an active Eagle nest in Minnesota! There are two eaglets in this nest that hatched 3.5 weeks ago. They have not left the nest yet. Today in their nest there is half a fish they are feasting on!

We will keep tabs on these live streaming animals and typically check in on them each day as we come back after lunch. Watching them sparks some very interesting conversations and learning. For example, today we noticed that the eagle nest looks pretty big. We looked up facts on eagles nests and found that they can be 2 metres wide! That is taller than the children in our class and bigger than the tables we sit at! We also read that eagles nests can be as deep as 4 metres which is higher than our classroom roof. We aren't sure if that is true and need to look into it a little further.

Have a great weekend!

Music Monday

On Monday it is Music Monday. Everybody in Canada they sing the song ISS (Is Somebody Singing) by Commander Chris Hadfield and The Barenaked Ladies. - Elisa

Most people try to sing at the exact same time. In our time zone it is at 12:00. -Carter V.

We are singing ISS for Commander Chris Hadfield. -Rebecca

We like the song ISS because at the end of the video Cmdr Hadfield lets go of his guitar and it floats because there is no gravity in space. -Katrina

ISS also stands for International Space Station. -Alexa

We are hoping to watch the live concert of Cmdr Hadfield from space on Monday at 12 pm (EDT). -Iain

The music video of the song is awesome! -Laine

ISS the video is really cool. I like it when he throws the guitar. -Paige

If you haven't already heard of Commander Chris Hadfield and the ways he is connecting from space, listen up! Here is yet another example of the positive ways he is using technology and social media to connect with youth in Canada and around the world. He has done live video chats with schools including Chief Peguis from RETSD, regularly tweets amazing photos of Earth from space (@Cmdr_Hadfield), is connected through Facebook, posts videos and answers questions that are sent to him through any of these platforms. He is definitely worth checking out and following. -Mrs. Dent Scarcello :)

An Awesome NHL Opportunity

Last night I went to my first Jets game. Unfortunately they lost but it was still fantastic to be there. My mom and I noticed that when the Jets came out, a little girl carrying a flag skated out with them, skated around and stood on the blue line for O Canada. We immediately thought, "what an awesome opportunity!"
When I got to school this morning, Ms Wasney told me that there is a contest kids can enter to be that person! The program is called the Scotiabank Skaters Program and hockey players between the ages of 7 and 14 can apply HERE. You could be that kid!!
You can also check out the experience one boy had being the Scotiabank Skater at this Winnipeg Free Press page.
