Earth Day Tips {IBL}

Mrs. Kohut's class and I have wrapped up their Earth Day Tips project. As I explained in a previous post, they wrote their tips to help the Earth and we typed them together. Then we did an art project using National Geographic magazines that were donated by a community member. Finally, we created a Haiku Deck so we could show off our work beyond the school hallway. We hope you enjoy it! -Grade 1, Mrs. Kohut and Mrs. Dent Scarcello :) Created with Haiku Deck, the free presentation app for iPad

Music Monday

On Monday it is Music Monday. Everybody in Canada they sing the song ISS (Is Somebody Singing) by Commander Chris Hadfield and The Barenaked Ladies. - Elisa

Most people try to sing at the exact same time. In our time zone it is at 12:00. -Carter V.

We are singing ISS for Commander Chris Hadfield. -Rebecca

We like the song ISS because at the end of the video Cmdr Hadfield lets go of his guitar and it floats because there is no gravity in space. -Katrina

ISS also stands for International Space Station. -Alexa

We are hoping to watch the live concert of Cmdr Hadfield from space on Monday at 12 pm (EDT). -Iain

The music video of the song is awesome! -Laine

ISS the video is really cool. I like it when he throws the guitar. -Paige

If you haven't already heard of Commander Chris Hadfield and the ways he is connecting from space, listen up! Here is yet another example of the positive ways he is using technology and social media to connect with youth in Canada and around the world. He has done live video chats with schools including Chief Peguis from RETSD, regularly tweets amazing photos of Earth from space (@Cmdr_Hadfield), is connected through Facebook, posts videos and answers questions that are sent to him through any of these platforms. He is definitely worth checking out and following. -Mrs. Dent Scarcello :)

We are talking about the caterpillars that are coming to our class next week. Our teacher told us that Mrs. Malkoske's class got theirs this week! We went to their blog to check them out and saw the livestream of their caterpillars. Our teacher told us we will have that too!

We have some questions for Mrs. Malkoske's class:

What type of caterpillars are they? -Paige
We are getting Painted Lady caterpillars. -Tommy-Lee
Are yours Painted Ladies too? -Max

Awesome Questions of the Day

Today we were doing Questions of the Day. It was fun to do because we got to ask our classmates a question. -Max

Today we learned how to do Question of the Day and now I think everybody knows how to do it. -Elisa

We right down a question on our paper and then we ask people our question. When we are finished asking everyone we write the total at the bottom. On the back we answer questions about the results. -Iain

We mark each person's answer with their initial so we can keep track of who we already asked. -Laine

I liked doing Question of the Day because we got to mark down our friend's answers. -Carter L

Some of our questions were yes or no questions but some were different. -Carter V and Paige

I noticed that a lot of people asked the question "Do you have a pet?" 7 people out of 19 asked this question - Mrs. Dent Scarcello

I liked answering my friend's questions. -Rebecca and Katrina

Some people didn't enjoy Question of the Day as much as other people. Maybe it wasn't their favorite. -Iain

I liked it because we got to walk around our classroom and answer each other's questions. -Alexa

Tips for Helping the Earth {IBL}

In IBL I have been working with both grade 1 classes. They wrote tips to help the Earth and we typed them together. Then we did an art project re-using some old National Geographic magazines that were donated to the school by a community member. The children used blue and green pieces from the magazines to cover the land and water on an outline of the Earth. We put the two together as a part of our Earth Day bulletin board.
Now we are working together to make a Haiku Deck of our work! Haiku Deck is a great app for the iPad that allows us to create a presentation of our work.  We will post our Haiku Decks here for you to see when they are complete. Stay tuned!

Earth Day Art

We are doing art today for Earth Day.
-Olivia

We are making flowers out of recyclable stuff.
-Katrina

One of the materials we used is newspaper and paint.
-Paige

We painted newspapers to make the flowers.
-Carter L

The flowers will be made out of newspaper and fabric.

Somebody donated fabric samples to the school because they weren't using them anymore.

-Tommy-Lee

We are using all the circles we cut out of fabric to make our flowers.
-Laine

We used all different kinds of fabrics.
-Elisa

Some fabrics that we used were hard to cut.
-Iain

We used lots of paint to paint the newspaper.
-Carter V

The colours of the paint were blue, red, orange, purple and yellow.
-Olivia

At the yellow group of paint we had to use two bowls of paint.
-Katrina

We tried not to get too much paint on the tables when we were painting the newspaper.
-Elisa

One of the other materials we are going to use is beads. The beads came from an old car seat cover. Our teacher got them from a garage sale.
-Paige

I stayed at the blue paint table the whole time.
-Tyler

The two tables I went to were blue and yellow.
-Elisa

Earth Day is about caring for the Earth and Mother Nature. That means by not littering. Compostable stuff can turn into soil that helps flowers and other plants grow.

-Max

We try not to drive our cars as much on Earth Day everyday because it's bad for the Earth.
-Kaitlyn

Growing and Changing Animals and our week

Yesterday we started brainstorming about things we know and things we wonder about animals. We are talking about how they grow and change. We worked in groups and then shared our ideas with the class. We are keeping track of our ideas using this lino board. You can click and drag it around to see the other ideas. The yellow ones are things we know and the blue ones are wonders we have.

I liked it when we got to go to the computer lab and Mrs. Dent showed us stuff we can do on our blog.
-Iain

I liked it when Mrs. Dent showed us the What I Am song.
-Katrina

Mrs. Dent Scarcello's blog (our blog) is really cool.
-Olivia

I liked the What I Am song because it taught us what we are.
-Carter L

The What I Am song gave us what to write in the speech bubble.
-Laine

The What I Am song gave us some ideas to put on the speech bubbles.
-Carter V

Growing Up to be Strong People - The Day of Pink!

Today was the Red Cross Day of Pink. Folks all over were encouraged to wear pink to take a stand against bullying. Why pink?
It started in 2007 when two high school students in Nova Scotia took a stand against bullying in their school. The students asked all of their peers to wear pink to school after they heard a male classmate had been bullied for wearing a pink shirt. To continue the momentum, the Canadian Red Cross Day of Pink campaign brings together schools and communities to wear the shirt and stand together against bullying. - http://www.redcross.ca/dayofpink/manitoba.asp

The children and I talked about this and started discussing the personality traits that we have that are going to make us strong people that stand up for others. We have also been listening to "What I Am" by Will.i.am (a lot, it's awesome) which talks about being a strong person. Awesome!

To pull it all together, each child decided which trait of theirs was the most important to them and we took a picture! We just need to snap one more photo tomorrow and our collage of anti-bullying, strong, supportive traits will be ready!

For now, here are a couple of samples. Stay tuned for the final product :)

You might be wondering, "how can 'fast' help us be strong people that can stand up for others?" like I was. The answer - if you see someone treating someone else unkindly then you can run really fast to tell someone and get help. I can't argue with that!
