Special Guest Artist!!

This morning we were really lucky to have a special guest visit us! We are researching careers and Karsten chose to research an artist. Elaine Dilay is a painter and came to answer his questions!

Elaine told us a technique to start with the lighter colours always. She is also a fast painter. She is a really good painter. - Ryann

Next she used a different colour of paint and she kind of taught us to put the paint on kind of thick so the white canvas doesn't show through. She is a really, really, really good painter. - Shelby

She taught us to not put too much water or it won't look like anything. - Marley

At the end she stuck the saran wrap on the light part and dragged it down to blend it together. - Ashley

She sprayed the water so it would look cool and drip down. She said don't use a lot of water or else the paint will all run away. - Andrew

She taught us to paint carefully so we wouldn't get it all smudged. - Dyson

We learned not to use too much dark colours or else is will look muddy. - Adam

She sells her paintings online, at her house, in some stores and some galleries in Winnipeg. She told us where she gets all the supplies and canvases. Sometimes from Michael's, sometimes from the dollar store and sometimes from a special art store. - Shelby

She has been painting since she was a kid and has been painting like this since she was about 25. She wasn't feeling well but didn't want to waste the day so she got some supplies and started painting. She like being an artist because there are no rules about art.

I asked what inspires her art and she said lots of things like stores, clothing, buildings, houses.

International Dot Day!!

This Sunday, September 15 is International Dot Day! It is the anniversary of publication of a great book, The Dot by Peter Reynolds (great author). We started celebrating today by reading The Dot and talking about being ourselves when we work on art at school. Each piece we create is our own and should look the way we want it to look. Art is what we want it to be! We started Kandinsky Circle art, one of my favorite pieces to do at school. It always looks so amazing when they are all done and we post them all together. I love circles (and polka dots) and I love colours. On Monday we have some other activities planned and don't forget to WEAR DOTS!

Mrs. Turner's Environmentalists! {IBL}

This week I finished up another project with our other grade 1 class, Mrs. Turner's class. The children wrote, edited and typed their tips to help the Earth and we did an art project together using up-cycled National Geographic magazines. Then, each student created their own slide in a Haiku Deck on an iPad. We hope you can follow all these tips all year long!

Tips for Helping the Earth {IBL}

In IBL I have been working with both grade 1 classes. They wrote tips to help the Earth and we typed them together. Then we did an art project re-using some old National Geographic magazines that were donated to the school by a community member. The children used blue and green pieces from the magazines to cover the land and water on an outline of the Earth. We put the two together as a part of our Earth Day bulletin board.
Now we are working together to make a Haiku Deck of our work! Haiku Deck is a great app for the iPad that allows us to create a presentation of our work.  We will post our Haiku Decks here for you to see when they are complete. Stay tuned!

Earth Day Art

We are doing art today for Earth Day.
-Olivia

We are making flowers out of recyclable stuff.
-Katrina

One of the materials we used is newspaper and paint.
-Paige

We painted newspapers to make the flowers.
-Carter L

The flowers will be made out of newspaper and fabric.

Somebody donated fabric samples to the school because they weren't using them anymore.

-Tommy-Lee

We are using all the circles we cut out of fabric to make our flowers.
-Laine

We used all different kinds of fabrics.
-Elisa

Some fabrics that we used were hard to cut.
-Iain

We used lots of paint to paint the newspaper.
-Carter V

The colours of the paint were blue, red, orange, purple and yellow.
-Olivia

At the yellow group of paint we had to use two bowls of paint.
-Katrina

We tried not to get too much paint on the tables when we were painting the newspaper.
-Elisa

One of the other materials we are going to use is beads. The beads came from an old car seat cover. Our teacher got them from a garage sale.
-Paige

I stayed at the blue paint table the whole time.
-Tyler

The two tables I went to were blue and yellow.
-Elisa

Earth Day is about caring for the Earth and Mother Nature. That means by not littering. Compostable stuff can turn into soil that helps flowers and other plants grow.

-Max

We try not to drive our cars as much on Earth Day everyday because it's bad for the Earth.
-Kaitlyn

Wacky Picasso Oil Pastel Art

This week we did a art project call Picasso! Its where you have oil pastels, but you'll need a pencil first and you draw half of your portrait side and half of your profile side. Then when you are done you outline everything with black oil pastel. Then you go on the the wacky oil pastel part, you can do whatever colour you want and the cool part is that you can put a under layer like I did. Like I put all the light colours there were on my portrait side with dark blue on top it looked cool. On my profile side it was all the neon colours underneath dark green. After you are done you take a Popsicle stick and scratch off what ever kind off design you want I did swirls, then you take more oil pastels and colour the background. Then you take the black oil pastel and outline  everything again then its done!! When they are done they look awesome and here are some pictures of them to prove it!

Peace Feels Like

This month the students in our school all read "What Does Peace Feel Like" by Vladimir Radunsky to start conversations about peace. The book discusses what peace feels like, looks like, sounds like, smells like with ideas from children.
Many classes also created art work for Remembrance Day. Here is a video of our art for the Remembrance Day assembly.

This Week at School

This week at school…
In science we watched more videos on YouTube. This time we were watching videos about air pressure.  There was a guy in Mexico and he had a watch to measure the pressure. He was down at sea level and the pressure was… I can’t remember sorry. When he was on the mountains there wasn’t that much pressure because it takes all the pressure away that you had on the beach.
In Gym we did lots of volleyball. It was about learning how to bump and today we learned how to volley the volleyball. We played different volleyball games. Like: backyard clean up and keep up with a partner. Today Me Matt, Dawson, Nick M, Nick S, And Cam.
In Art we did silhouettes. STEPs: you colour the paper with paint in order yellow orange red purple blue black. Then you let it dry while it is drying you cut out your black shapes. When your picture is dry you glue your black cut outs to your paper and that is it. And that is how you make silhouettes.
This week in Math we did our math quiz. I think I did really well because on the pre-test I got it all right and I studied hard. In math otherwise we did estimates. It was hard because you were always trying to get the right answer. It was different
