Skype + Daily 5 = Awesome!

Last week we used Skype again during Daily 5 for Listen to Reading with our buddies in Morris. It is incredible to me how quickly our 21st Century Learners/Digital Natives pick up these tools and use them independently. Sometimes with our network we have technical difficulties and I have an entire team of "technicians" ready to help or at least "suggest" what I am doing wrong! Ms. Martens and I get the call going and say hello, and usually some stories are shared between the classes. Then, the buddies that are reading to each other take it away, one after the other. It is awesome to me to see our classroom walls turning into windows.
The story that Carl from Ms. Martens class shared with us was very interesting!
May 18 - I went fishing in the ditch with my dad. There are fish in the ditch because of the flood. I caught three fish. One of them was huge. - Carl
I suggested that Carl should go with his dad to each of the ditches to save all the stranded fish! He didn't think that was such a great idea. We are happy for our Morris friends that they didn't have to leave their homes and that the flood water has receded for this year.

This week at school

This week at school we went to the Folkdance Festival! When we got off the bus we had to walk a little bit to where we have to dance. The dance's we did were : Hand jive, Bird dance, Car wash, trains, YMCA, Alunelul, Tarentella, macarana, Hands up, Get off the couch. We did a LOT of dancing. We ate lunch there. After lunch we did some more dances. After those dances our buses weren't here yet. So we did more dances. When we were back at school all the grade 1's 2's and 3's went to the gym to watch a movie. We had to vote. the movies were : The Incredibles, finding nemo, shrek 1, shrek 2 and shrek 3. The incedibles won. While we were watching the movie, we got popcicals. They were the ones where they have 3 colours insted of one. the flavors were : grape, lime and watermelon. They were awesome! But we had to stop the movie for home time.

Dancing in the Park

Yesterday we, along with half of the other grade 1-3 students in the division, went to the Folkdance Festival to dance in the park. This was my first time going and I thought it was the best thing EVER! What better way to spend a warm day in May than with hundreds of kids dancing to loud music in a park. It also helped that it is not yet bug season, there was some cloud cover to keep us cool and the temperature was warm.

Watch Our Caterpillars - LIVE!

Most of our caterpillars have formed chrysalises (or chrysalides!) and we have started moving them from their cup habitats to their cage. We have also started streaming our chrysalises LIVE from right inside the cage! Once in a while you can see the chrysalises shake, that is part of their process. Soon, some will start emerging as butterflies. This usually takes place when there is no one in the room so we are really excited that we will be able to watch them. You can watch too on our Butterflies page.

A Chilly Day of Learning

Today I am at a technology conference in Gimli, MB. It has been excellent and I can't wait to bring some new ideas to our classroom. At lunch I went outside (very briefly because it is SO cold) so I could share my view with you. I hope you had a good Friday with Mrs. G!

We Went to Fort Whyte...

As we mentioned a couple of days ago, we went to Fort Whyte. It was fantastic! We decided to use Voki to share what we saw, what we learned and what we did while we were at Fort Whyte. This activity was a blast!
When we got back to school, we brainstormed our ideas and took a photo of it with our iPods so we could save the ideas for the next day. When we were ready to write, each table had an iPod to reference the brainstorm session. We wrote our reflections in our Writer's Notebooks and made sure to include what we saw, what we learned and what we did at Fort Whyte. Each of us recorded our reflection using a digital voice recorder, created our avatar on Voki and uploaded our reflection.

Here is a sample of how it turned out!

Fort Whyte Voki Reflection

We are trying a new tool to reflect on our trip to Fort Whyte. Check out the Voki that we created together. Later, the children in our class will be writing their own reflections and creating a Voki with a small group to share what they learned at Fort Whyte.

A Great Way to Spend a Tuesday!

Today we went on a field trip to Fort Whyte. This is one of my favorite places to go on a field trip, both as a student and a teacher. We will have more time tomorrow to post about what we learned, today we are going to do a Graffiti Reflection! Stay tuned to check it out. Also, families can stay tuned to our Shutterfly Album where I will post photos from our day.

Caterpillars

Just in case you missed it, we got our caterpillars last week! We have a whole page on our blog about the growth and changes we see in our caterpillars. The tabs for our pages are along the top of the blog, below the title, "Mrs. Dent Scarcello's Class". Just click on the tab that says "Butterflies" and you can see them grow with us!
As we watch them grow we keep our observations in a Butterfly Observation Journal. We have also been talking about the butterfly life cycle, metamorphosis. Today, we made the life cycle using Kidspiration. Here is a sample from Madison.

Baby Eagles

Mrs. Malkoske's class left us a comment with questions on our Growth and Changes blog post. One question was "when do you think the eagles will leave their nest?" We answered their question but we were really just guessing an answer. Some of us thought they would stay for 1 or 2 more weeks and some of us thought they would stay for 1 or 2 more months. We started talking about how scientists make educated guesses and decided that we should look further into this to make a more educated guess. Some suggestions from our class were to:
  • "google it"
  • "bing it"
  • look it up on wikipedia
  • look in a book
  • ask somebody
We looked it up on google and found that the bald eagle will stay in it's nest for 11 or 12 weeks before it can fly away. We also found out that the eagle is in it's egg for 35 days before it hatches. Since we don't know when these eagles were born we don't know exactly when they will leave the nest. We have been watching them for 2 weeks so at the most they will be in the nest for another 8 - 10 weeks.
Phewf, thanks for the question Mrs. Malkoske's Class, you really got us thinking after lunch! We are also looking forward to following the Peregrine Falcons who live in a nest at a hotel in Winnipeg. This webcam is set to start streaming tomorrow at http://www.cbc.ca/manitoba/features/falcon/.

This is a map with the locations of the animal cams we are following.

Blog Commenting

We noticed today that some of the comments the children have been posting to our blog have not been appearing. We decided to investigate this and went to the computer lab to try leaving comments. This sparked a discussion about leaving quality comments. We decided that a quality comment would include:
  1. Saying something nice, leaving a compliment.
  2. Making a connection to ourselves or our lives.
  3. Asking a question.
  4. Leaving your name.
  5. Re-reading your comments to check for mistakes.
We discovered that after you press "post comment" there was a word verification step that most children and Mrs. Dent Scarcello were not noticing so their comments were not posting. We changed the setting so that we don't have to do this step anymore but all the comments go to Mrs. Dent Scarcello for approval so the comments are still controlled and safe.
